Changing Face of Chile

During the 15 year that we have been away from Chile, so many changes have taken place. Not simply that Chile has kept pace with the changes elsewhere, but in many ways Chile has become almost as modern and up to date as Australia and other first world countries.

Prices too have caught up and so whereas one could expect to pay around 20-25% of "at home" prices before, now it's more likely to be around 60%.

One of the sadder things, we think, is the catching up in casualness of dress. The Chileans always too great care to present themselves impeccably and smartly, but now they appear almost as sloppy as we do.

We have been treated these past few days to brilliantly fine weather, warm and pleasant. We had lunch at a typical fish restaurant on the Costa Brava, not far from where we're staying. Outside the window the fishermen were hauling in their catch in their little yellow and red boats, while the seagulls and pelicans waited in anticipation of their piece of the spoils. The fish is every bit as good as we remember and we have managed to dispose of several delicious Corvina, Congrio and pescada. Yum.
